Smart devices, and the ordinary objects around a house. The same prevention argument as automotive, applied to things that cost a few thousand rupees and are currently expected to sit there and do nothing until something goes wrong.
Two examples, so this stays concrete.
The suitcase
It has already weighed itself.
A GPS tracker so it is never simply gone. A camera. A scale in the base and a display on the shell. It has stored your flight tag, so it knows which airline you are on and what your allowance is, and it tells you where you stand against it while you are still at home. Not at the counter, with a queue behind you, repacking a case on the floor.
The stove
It cuts the gas before you smell it.
No lighter, because it ignites from stored heat. A breeze takes the flame out and it closes the valve itself rather than filling the room. You put milk on and walk away, and when it climbs it catches the boil-over as it starts, before the pan is ruined and the stain is set into the surface.
Nobody has to be paying attention for it to work.
That is the whole test. A smart object that requires you to open an app, check a dashboard and interpret a notification has moved the work onto you and called it a feature.
What we would argue for.
Sense the failure, not the usage
Most connected devices report what you did. The useful signal is the one that says something is about to go wrong.
Act without asking
If the safe action is obvious and reversible, take it and report it afterwards. A prompt during a boil-over is not help.
Work when the network does not
A device that becomes ordinary the moment the connection drops was never doing the thinking locally, and the failure will happen at exactly that moment.
Earn the data it takes
Every object like this collects something. The only defensible reason to keep any of it is that it makes the next intervention earlier.
Fail visibly
When the sensing itself stops working the owner should know immediately, rather than trusting a protection that quietly stopped months ago.
Outlive the fashion cycle
A stove lasts fifteen years. Firmware that is abandoned in three turns a safety feature into a liability.
